Eggplant

Eggplant

Eggplants (aka aubergines), require more heat than tomatoes but similar growing conditions. Being slow growing, they require a long, hot growing season.

Originally from tropical Asia, they thrive in hot, humid weather. In frost-free areas eggplants can be treated as perennials, producing fruit for a few seasons. Their stiff branches will need staking. For maximum yield, pick the fruit as soon as it is ripe — when the skin is easily indented when light pressure is applied.
