Verbena bonariensis
Possibly one of the most valuable of summer flowering plants. This beauty from Brazil threads its stiffly upright stems through other perennials, floating hundreds of amethyst colour spheres loftily throughout your garden. Ideal for the back of the border where it softens the outline of its garden companions.
How to grow
Highly vigorous and readily self-seeds. Can be invasive. Incredibly hardy and drought - tolerant. Remove spent flowers regularly to prevent seed spreading and prune to the ground when flowering finishes in autumn. Not suitable near bushland or pasture.
