Tree Onion

Allium x proliferum

Also known as ‘walking onions’, these deliciously mild onions produce a cluster of small bulbs at the base (perfect for salads) and a stem with an additional cluster of bulbs at the top (ideal for pickling). The weight of these bulbs causes the stem to bend, touch the soil and the process, repeats. If left in the garden, these onions will literally walk around your garden beds. Biennial.

Tree Onion

The stalks, bulbs, and topsets are all edible and can be used in place of regular onions. The young leaves, shoots, and stalks can be used like spring onions in soups, stews, omelets, stir-fries, or as a finishing herb. The small size of the topsets make them ideal for pickling and they can also be drizzled with oil and salt, and roasted whole.
How to grow

The best time for harvesting is August, when the bulbs are ripe and firm. For more plants dig up the mother bulb in autumn, divide and plant each individual bulb in new locations.
