Sage 'Berggarten'
The sage cultivar of choice for culinary pursuits, this variety is known as 'broad leaf sage' for its large (up to 10cm), elliptical to oval grey-green leaves. It is an evergreen sub shrub with woody stems and a compact mounding habit, useful as a tidy addition to perennial plantings as well as the productive garden. Rarely flowering, it makes a striking foliage feature with the varied angle of the leaves producing a range of colours from bright green to silver tones, aging to soft downy grey. The name 'Berggaten' translates to 'mountain garden', referencing the area in which it was grown on a German estate.
How to grow
Plant in full sun in a well-drained soil, raised garden bed or pot. Mulch with aged compost in autumn. Water regularly during establishment, then only as required as it has an aversion to wet feet. Prune regularly to maintain compactness and reduce woody growth. Can be shortlived, beneficial to replace every three years.
