Pear 'Josephine de Malines'
Named Josephine after the wife of breeder Major Esperen and the town they were discovered, Malines in Belgium. Major Esperen, a well-known pomologist, began cultivating this delicious heirloom variety from a chance seedling in 1830. Josephine pears, short for Josephine de Malines pears were also awarded the Royal Horticultural Society’s Garden of Merit in 1993. Pollinate with 'Packham's Triumph' and best grown in a warm spot in the garden.
How to grow
Plant in a sunny position with well drained and well worked soil. Take care to plant the bud union above the soil level. Water in well and keep soil moist until tree is established. Fertilise when planting and again after new growth appears. Prune tree when planting to encourage new growth. Always plant more than one type for cross-pollination.
