Cherry Pie 'Purple Heirloom'
Native to Peru, Heliotropium 'Purple Heirloom' offers the characteristically wonderful vanilla fragrance of South American Heliotropes, often bred out in other modern cultivars. Its beautiful vanilla, baked cherry pie-like scent pervades the garden and is a magnet for bees and butterflies. Delicate small star shaped purple flowers held in pannicles above the veined and slightly hairy mid-green foliage appear in progression from spring, through summer and into autumn, making for a generous, easy care stalwart for any style of garden, including cottage, mixed perennial, woodland or coastal.
How to grow
Full sun, part shade in free draining soil. Deadhead spent flowers regularly to extend flowering. Cut back in late winter in preparation for spring growth and to prevent plants becoming woody. Drought tolerant once established, especially if shaded, enjoys summer watering during dry periods. Resents waterlogging, protect from frost.
