Calendula 'Pink Surprise'
A low-maintenance hardy annual, calendula seed should be direct sown for optimal growth. Scatter seeds over a prepared soil in spring and cover with around 1cm of quality soil. Be sure to maintaining consistent moisture during germination (usually 10-14 days). Thin to 10-15cm spacings if sown in thick clumps. In summer, deadhead or let flowers run to seed for resowing next spring. A useful companion plant, calendulas attract a variety of pollinators and their sticky sap traps small chewing insects like thrip and aphids. Edible flower petals and leaves can also be used in salads or to brew your own calendula tea. Tolerates some frost.
