HELLO SPRING
Your Gardening Guide for November
WARM REGION
Welcome to November!
Traditionally the busiest month of the year in the garden, the spring garden is in its prime. There’s still lots of work to be done to prepare your garden now for a long hot summer ahead.
November Jobs
#1 Edible Flowers
Sow seed of edible flowers- cornflowers, zinnia, dianthus and sunflowers perform great in the heat.
#2 Compost
If you haven’t already, start a compost system. This reduces your garden and kitchen waste and is the best organic fertiliser you can get.
#3 Planting
Plant lots of heat loving crops- okra, chillies, snake beans, eggplant and tomatoes. Once these grow you can underplant with lettuces and salad greens.
#4 Attract birds
Plant to attract birds to your garden- native grasses will provide seed, grevilleas are great for nectar-feeding birds, like lorikeets and other parrots and spiky plants provide protection for small birds.
November Essentials
It's time to get planting your last remaining crops in preparation for your summer harvest. We look at the benefits of living mulch and we get our hands dirty planting some strawberries!

Roses
Enjoy a spring flush of rose blooms. Providing light fertilising soon after the spring flush of blooms and maintaining good soil moisture, will give another flush of blossom at Christmas time.
Herbs
Plant perennial herbs like rosemary, thyme, oregano, lemon grass and chives and plant out ginger tubers.
Shrubs
Plant evergreen shrubs and trees including citrus.
Plant garden colour
Marigolds, verbena, cosmos, sunflowers and dianthus to add colour and interest and the beneficial insects will love them.
