Trailing Betel Leaf Pepper

Piper sarmentosum

The edible leaves of this South East Asian trailing vine are spicy and can be eaten raw or cooked. Often used as an edible wrap for both meat and rice dishes, this subtropical/tropical trailing vine or ground cover also makes a lovely indoor edible plant. Not to be confused with the stimulant Betel Nut (Areca nut) or Piper betel.

Trailing Betel Leaf Pepper

Deep green leaves, a trailing habit and white cone-like flowers are enough reason to grow this tropical pepper, but the fact that the leaves are used as a wrap for meat and rice dishes makes it the perfect kitchen plant. Native to SE Asia it is used widely in Vietnamese cuisine, and makes a wonderful edible houseplant in most climates.
How to grow

Frost tolerant once established, although grows best in a frost-free environment. In cold areas, grow in a pot or hanging basket. Prefers a moist soil but does not like water-logging. Prefers part shade for optimal leaf colour and flavour.
